The Cook at We’koqma’q Day Care will play a vital role in ensuring that our children receive nutritious and appealing meals that support their growth and development. This position requires a commitment to food safety, creativity in meal planning, and a collaborative approach to working with daycare staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan and prepare nutritious meals and snacks for children, following dietary guidelines and any specific dietary restrictions.
- Ensure all meals are prepared in a safe and hygienic manner, adhering to health and safety regulations.
- Maintain a clean and organized kitchen, including regular cleaning of equipment and work areas.
- Order and manage inventory of food supplies, ensuring freshness and quality.
- Collaborate with daycare staff to create menus that are both appealing and nutritious for children.
- Monitor and record food temperatures and storage conditions to ensure food safety.
- Accommodate special dietary needs and allergies as required.
- Assist in serving meals and snacks to children, ensuring portion control and presentation.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
- Previous experience as a cook, preferably in a daycare, school, or similar setting.
- Possession of a valid food handling certification is required or willingness to obtain upon hire.
- Knowledge of child nutrition and dietary requirements.
- Ability to plan and prepare balanced meals that appeal to young children.
- Strong understanding of food safety and sanitation practices.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication skills and a positive attitude.
- Criminal record check, vulnerable sector check, and child abuse registry check.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- The Cook will work in a kitchen environment with exposure to heat, noise, and kitchen equipment.
- The role requires standing, bending, and lifting throughout the shift.
- This individual will work a Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 3:00 pm schedule.
